Tamaki Tom Yum Soup Base: How to Make Tom Yum at Home

A sour and spicy broth, the aroma of lemongrass and galangal, shrimp, mushrooms, and fresh herbs—Tom Yum is unmistakable. Its vibrant blend of sour, spicy, and aromatic notes has made it one of the most recognizable dishes in Thai cuisine.
In 2024, Tom Yum Kung—the traditional Thai shrimp soup—was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Preparing Tom Yum at home or in a professional kitchen is now much easier thanks to Tamaki’s new product: Tom Yum Soup Base.
What is Tamaki Tom Yum Soup Base?
Tamaki Tom Yum Soup Base is a concentrate featuring a signature sour-spicy flavor and the aromatic notes of lemongrass and galangal.
It streamlines the cooking process: there is no need to gather a complex array of spices and aromatics or struggle to achieve the perfect flavor balance from scratch every time.
Simply add the base to water or broth, then toss in shrimp, mushrooms, tomatoes, and herbs—and your Tom Yum flavor foundation is ready.
How to make Tom Yum using the ready-made base
Bring water or chicken broth to a boil and add the base, adjusting the intensity to your liking.
Next, add the sliced mushrooms, followed by the peeled shrimp. Add the cherry tomatoes towards the end of cooking.
Before serving, finish the soup with a squeeze of lime juice and a garnish of cilantro or green onions. If you prefer a milder, creamier flavor, you can also add coconut milk. Tom Yum goes well with rice: it complements the rich broth and helps balance the spiciness.
